“Coffee is Love….Coffee is Healing….Coffee is Life.” That informal slogan sums up the Big Bean story. In 2000, Christie was the first barista hired by the original owners of the Big Bean.
Years later, after moving away and returning home, Christie resumed her barista role part-time. After countless cups of coffee Greg, a customer, got up the nerve to ask Christie out. Romance brewed and they married in 2012; often remarking how wild it would be to own the coffee shop where they first met. Their dream came true in 2019 when the opportunity to purchase The Big Bean presented itself.
Combining tradition with modern social media and new product offerings, sales grew by 24% in the first year and staffing increased by 20% and they explored adding more locations. Big Bean’s second shop in Annapolis is a testament to the healing powers of coffee.
888 Bestgate Road was the site of the tragic mass shooting at The Capital Gazette newspaper. Even though the space sat vacant, and a cloud of sadness hung over the building, the Costers saw tremendous opportunity. Today, Big Bean proudly anchors the first floor, offering a welcoming, relaxed space for professionals and local residents alike; healing the community one cup at a time.
It the Big Bean’s commitment to personal service and family-like atmosphere that sets them apart. You won’t ever find a drive-thru at their locations because they don’t want to lose the connection to their customers.
The aroma of success fills the air, with sales currently on pace to reach $1.5 million this year and they’ve just opened a third location, expanding north to Millersville.
Greg and Christie take great pride in working locally with fellow entrepreneurs to source roasted coffee beans and bakery items. They are passionate about mentoring other small businesses and giving back to the communities they serve and support a variety of organizations benefiting individuals with special needs or those facing cancer or homelessness and youth programs.
