The Advanced Business & Management class at Oakland Mills takes their learning to the next level with hands-on experience operating the Rise & Grind coffee shop.
Each year, a new class takes over to run the café, located on campus, for a period of 10 weeks offering coffee, donuts, hot chocolate, water and snacks. In the afternoon, the menu expands with pizza, sodas and sports drinks.
This year’s class of 16 students committed to transform Rise & Grind and top last year’s sales figures. Market research revealed that their coffee didn’t have the best reputation which led to purchasing new coffee machines, focusing on quality control and offering free samples.
Other improvements included a subscription service delivering orders directly to teachers at their classroom; creating store merchandise and introducing employee shirts emblazoned with the company logo.
Electing to remain open beyond the traditional 10 week span to the end of the school year, the class set an all time sales record of over $10,000, making a profit of $6800.
After reimbursing everyone for their initial investment, the class voted to make a donation to the local food pantry and pay “dividends” to their subscription customers.
