The 2017 Accountant Advocate is Peter McDonald of Smith, Elliott, Kearns & Company, LLC in Hagerstown, nominated by the Hagerstown SCORE chapter.
It takes more than an affinity for numbers to make a successful accountant. It’s the attention to detail and ability to look beyond the numbers that make the difference between a number cruncher and a great accountant, like Peter. His expertise incudes new business start-ups, multi-state taxation and processing Canadian income taxes. He also specializes in accounting system compliance for federal government contractors. But it’s Peter’s true concern for his clients that sets him apart. He takes the time to sit down and learn about their business operations, goals and concerns so he can better understand who they are and where they’re headed.
Peter draws on his vast network of contacts to guide his clients on their path to success, becoming a key member of their management team. He stays the course; helping them shape their business from creation to community fixture. He attends a variety of state and local government forums, often speaking on behalf of his clients and voicing their concerns over unnecessary regulatory burdens. He firmly believes that by improving the performance of small businesses, the overall climate is lifted and strengthened with job creation and community reinvestments.
Peter serves on the Board of the Western Maryland Chapter of the American Red Cross, is a volunteer instructor for SCORE workshops and is a graduate of and now serves on the Board and Finance Committee for Leadership Washington County.
